Enjoy the nostalgic taste of sake manju (a steamed bun made with rice wine and filled with sweet azuki bean paste) prepared by the store owner. Each one is made with a lot of time and effort, and even the sakadane (a leavening agent made by fermenting koji) and bean paste are made by the store owner herself. Please take some home as a souvenir of Sagamihara!

Nigomi udon is a local dish from the Tsukui area of Sagamihara in which udon noodles are simmered directly in a broth containing seasonal vegetables. The name is said to refer to the way in which the broth becomes cloudy (nigoru in Japanese) when simmered, and it may even be a corruption of the words nikomi udon (udon simmered in broth). It is currently served as a winter-only menu item at four restaurants in the city.

Obarajuku Honjin is the only surviving inn in the prefecture where daimyo (feudal lords) stayed during the Edo period (1603-1867). Under a system called sankin-kotai, the daimyo were required to alternate annually between living in their domain and the capital of Edo. It is a majestic building in a purely Japanese style, with a raised threshold at the entrance bearing a family crest. The interior is also worth seeing. Every year on November 3, the Koshu-Kaido Road Obarajuku Honjin Festival is held, which includes a daimyo's procession and a matchlock gun demonstration.

Make and taste kankoyaki (stuffed flour dumplings), a local dish that has been passed down in the Sagamihara area since the Edo period (1603-1867). Kankoyaki is a simple dish similar to oyaki dumplings, but there is something special about eating it in the middle of the campground's natural setting.

This is a research facility of the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA). A part of the facility is open to the general public (including small children) for tours. Oginopan's famous Tanzawa Anpan is a thin bun pastry jam-packed with sweet red bean paste. Although it looks small, it is very filling. Their agepan (deep-fried bread), which won a gold medal at a prefectural “B-class gourmet” (cheap and delicious food) competition, is also popular. Besides buying their bread, you can also go on a tour of the factory.

This museum collaborates with the adjacent JAXA Sagamihara Campus to promote “space,” and even has a life-sized model of Japanese probe Asteroid Explorer “Hayabusa.” The planetarium is one of the largest in the prefecture, with a dome 23 meters in diameter.
